Provenance, by Stephen F. Austin, PhD, presents an anthology of fifty-nine articles and essays that originally appeared in the Journal of Singing over the period from 2005-2016. Austin’s work, which links historic and contemporary voice teaching, with additional support provided by voice science, follows in the rich tradition established by Berton Coffin, Cornelius Reid, and James Stark. But none of these prior authors came close to the comprehensive content of the current volume. Original sources are both cited and reprinted—in translation and facsimile—with Austin’s commentary demonstrating the efficacy of the work of distinguished master teachers from Manuel Garcia, through Lamperti, Shakespeare, Bassini, Stockhausen, Root, Klein, and many others. Each new generation of singing teachers seems to think it must “reinvent the wheel:” Austin clearly proves that there is an alternate, more effective path to vocal excellence.
